[workshops] Why young people should read popular science texts, and why they should do it right now.

Professor Peti-Stantić participated at a state-level professional development teacher conference organized by the Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency. The conference for Croatian language teachers was titled Tko čita, tko piše: užitak i značenja, Potreba za čitanjem književnih i neknjiževnih tekstova i pozitivan stav prema čitanju unutar područja kurikula hrvatskoga jezika [Who reads, who writes: reading for pleasure and meaning; The necessity of reading literary and non-literary texts and creating a positive attitude towards reading within the Croatian language curriculum framework].
The conference was held on 31 August and 1 September 2021 on Zoom, and professor Peti-Stantić held 4 workshops titled Zašto mladi trebaju čitati popularnoznanstvene tekstove, i to odmah? [Why young people should read popular science texts, and why they should do it right now.]
The texts used in the workshops were written by Ivan Đikić and Pavel Gregorić and are a part of the newly published book edited by Anita Peti-Stantić and Vedrana Stantić, titled Putovanje u nepoznato: Zašto se bavim znanošću i kako je do toga došlo? [A trip to the unknown: Why am I a scientist and how did I become one?]

[conference participation] Society for the Scientific Study of Reading, 28th conference

Professor Anita Peti-Stantić, PhD, participated in the 28th SSSR conference (Society for the Scientific Study of Reading) on 15 July 2021. The paper which was presented at the symposium Textbook Analysis around the World: Does the Text, Activity, and Question design align with the Reading Comprehension Needs of Upper Grades Students? was written together with professor Gordana Keresteš, PhD, and Vedrana Gnjidić. [invited lecture] Information at the interface of semantics and syntax: “big” and “small”, concrete and abstract words

Professor Peti-Stantić held an invited lecture at the Professional and scientific seminar for lecturers of Croatian as a foreign language organized by Croaticum.

The lecture was titled Informacija na presjecištu semantike i sintakse: ‘velike’ i ‘male’, konkretne i apstraktne riječi. [Information at the interface of semantics and syntax: “big” and “small”, concrete and abstract words].

[invited lecture] Let’s start reading for curiosity and reading with the youth so we do not lose our words

Professor Peti-Stantić held an invited lecture at the annual meeting of the Bilogora, Podravina and Kalnik Association of Librarians. The lecture was titled Učitajmo se u znatiželju i čitajmo s mladima da ne ostanemo bez riječi. [Let’s start reading for curiosity and reading with the youth so we do not lose our words].

[book presentation] Public forum: Focus on teachers

The public forum Učitelji u fokusu [Focus on teachers] included the presentation of two books written by Anita Peti-Stantić, and Anita Peti-Stantić and Vedrana Stantić.

Karolina Lisak Vidović moderated the conversation with the authors, Anita Peti-Stantić and Vedrana Stantić, and Mirela Barbaroša Šikić, higher advisor at the Croatian Teacher Training Agency.

[Zagreb Book Festival]

One of the first events of the Zagreb book festival included a conversation about the books Čitanjem do (spo)razumijevanja: od čitalačke pismenosti do čitateljske sposobnosti  [Reading leads to (mutual) understanding: from reading literacy to reading ability], Znati(želja): Zašto mladi trebaju čitati popularnoznanstvene tekstove, i to odmah? [Curiosity: Why young people should read popular science texts, and why they should do it right now.]. and Stvaranje čitatelja [The creation of the reader]. Their authors, Anita Peti-Stantić, Vedrana Stantić, and Nenad Rizvanović, participated in a talk moderated by the poet Sanja Baković.
